Moving house can be a great expense, not just on your pocket, but also on the environment. There are a number of eco-friendly ways of moving house that can not only make moving more affordable, it can also help to reduce the amount of waste and expense created during a typical home move.

The first eco-friendly moving tip is to reduce the overall amount of what is being moved by having yard and garage sales prior to the moving date to eliminate items you no longer want or need. Consider donating whatever is not sold to your favourite charitable organisation or vintage store rather than spending the time, money and energy to cart unwanted items to your new location.

When choosing a moving company, look for ones that use eco-friendly bio diesel fuels and subscribe to green moving practices such as using recyclable boxes and packing materials. Many companies are starting to employ greener practices such as vehicle type, emissions and using green materials and it doesn’t cost any more so there’s no excuse! If you’re looking for a London man and van, it’s worth getting one of these vehicles as they will be exempt from the emissions charge.

The next tip is to get your possessions organised in boxes that are made of green materials. Use boxes made of recycled materials or ask friends and family members to pass along used boxes and packing materials such as bubble wrap. Ask your local supermarket for free empty cardboard boxes, perfect to use for shipping or use social networking media to ask for free recyclable packing supplies from someone who may have recently moved into your area and now needs to get rid of their boxes. Newspaper also makes a great eco-friendly cushioning agent when packing for a move, so start saving your daily newspapers for about a month before the moving date. Old t-shirts, towels and blankets also make good packing materials to protect hard items from rubbing against one another during transport.

Double up on your packing to reduce the total amount of boxes being moved by storing smaller lightweight items inside larger items and containers. Purchase plastic bins made using recycled material to move your possessions so these bins can be reused at your new home.

And finally, once you are fully moved into your new home, check our these great tips for maintaining a lifestyle of green living !

  2. Amber says:

You can also use plastic crates instead of cardboard boxes. This way, the crates can still be reused after.
